The 3 Keys to Building a Successful Site

Victory Fingers ImageWith the new year, many people are looking to start up new sites and begin new projects. But while this is great, the simple truth is that the vast majority of these projects will fail, many becoming nothing but memories before even spring sets in.

So what can you do to make sure your new projects have, at the very least, the best chance of survival possible? There’s no truly easy answer but, over the years, I have noticed something of a pattern in the sites of mine and others that have taken off and done well. It may not be a sure-fire way to guarantee a successful site launch, but I certainly haven’t seen many sites be successful without these elements.

Of these keys there are three big ones that seem to be the best predictors possible of success. So, if you’re preparing to launch a new site or even just thinking about doing so, it’s likely worthwhile to check and make sure these factors are in place before pressing the publish button.

You might find it best to rethink and recalibrate your idea in order to avoid having it run aground later.

1. Choose Something You Are Passionate About

In blogging and website development in general, there is no substitute for passion. If you feel strongly about something, really enjoy it and put yourself behind it, it will show in everything you do.

While it’s great to be knowledgeable about a topic and an expert in the field, you can learn about a subject as you blog about it, becoming an expert as you go. You can’t however, develop a passion for it as you go.

Your passion is what gets your readers excited about your topic, whatever it is, and its what keeps you writing on it after the going gets tough and you would otherwise be thinking about quitting.

In short, if you don’t feel strongly about your topic, you’ll never be able to engage your readers and, when that happens, it will just be too easy to quit and walk away.

2. Find A Good, Under-Served Niche

Once you’ve found a topic you’re passionate about, you need to find a niche within that topic that has a real need for your site. Whether it’s a new audience to target, a sub-genre of that area or just a new angle or slant, you have to do something truly unique with your site.

If you walk into a field where dozens of larger, better-established sites are already entrenched, you’re most likely going to make very little progress. Finding a smaller market that is underserved lets you get your foot in the door and then establish yourself before moving into larger fields.

On the Web, it is much better for a new site to be a big fish in a smaller pond than the reverse. With over a billion users of the Web, you can most likely find an audience even in niches that might seem impossibly small.

If you target well and offer something unique, you’ll likely find that the audience is there.

3. Keep Determination Alive

On the Web, “overnight success stories” stories takes months or even years to happen. For every site that’s a hit within weeks of publication, there are thousands of sites that got there by sticking with it and growing it the old fashioned way.

Go into your site assuming that the first 6 months to a year will be fairly abysmal and use that time to create good content and promote it. The efforts may not have immediate returns but will pay off in the longer run.

If your niche truly is unique, you’ll likely even have people telling you that you’re crazy and that you can never build a site in that niche. This is often where passion is the most crucial as it keeps you from giving up when the naysayers show up.

All in all, look at your site as a long-term project and not something to give up on within the first six months or longer and you’ll likely start to see the first rewards for your effort. Once that happens, building toward a successful site is much easier and much more natural.

Bottom Line

When it’s all said in done, the key to building a successful site is to find a topic you’re passionate about, find a niche that you can serve well and then stick with it. It seems simple, but most sites are started without one or more of these variables.

Do they guarantee a successful site? No. But not having them does virtually guarantee a site won’t succeed.

Unless your plan is to get extremely lucky, which is never a good “plan” regardless, these are the things you need before putting words on screen or installing your CMS. Without them, the project may be doomed before it begins and that makes the entire effort a giant waste of time.

How to Supercharge Your Blog

2010 is coming to an end and now is the time for bloggers to begin to have supercharge your blognew plans for moving their blog ahead in the new year.

Many of us have invested a lot of effort into our blogs and we’re now reaping the rewards and many of us have wasted a lot of time doing things that contribute nothing to the success of our blog in the year 2010. It is time to revise your blogging plan and this article will be giving you some tips to supercharge your blog.

Focus on Your Content

Writing quality content is essential to your success as a blogger and there is no point in writing a post if it won’t have an impact on others. The more effort you put into your blog posts and the more impact it has on people’s lives the better results you will get from your blog.

When I was still a fairly new blogger, I was averaging 150 visitors a day and I wrote a guest post for a particular top blog. I didn’t focus on giving the best of my content and I believed traffic and marketing is all that matters. My guest post went live on that blog and I ended up having over 1000 visitors to my blog on the same day, fast forward to 3 days and you will hardly believe I went back to getting the same number of visitors I was getting before that particular guest post.

There is a great difference between getting traffic and making your traffic stick and as a blogger your main aim should be to get quality traffic that sticks – that can only be done by providing quality content.

Lead by Example

If you try to estimate the number of blogs we have online about how to make money blogging you will end up finding out that there are millions of them.

The truth is that very few of these bloggers truly make money online and this explains the reason why most of them find it very difficult to make money from their blogs.

There are a lot of hypes on the internet that people are tired of reading just any content; they want to read from someone who has been there.

The only way to successfully make money blogging is not only by blogging in the how to make money online niche, in fact, you will easily achieve success with other niches you’re more knowledgeable and passionate about.

If you’re yet to be making money online try to search within yourself to see what you’re more knowledgeable and successful at; focus on building a successful online business in this area before teaching people how to make money online.

A true blogger would lead by action and not by words. You should let people see clearly that you not only know what you’re saying but you’re getting results from it. This will give you more credibility and will make people trust anything you say, it will also make them willing to share your content while referring their friends and family members to your blog.

Promote! Promote! Promote!

It doesn’t matter how knowledgeable you are about a subject or how sticky the content you write is, people won’t know about you if you don’t market your blog.

While it is highly important to focus on giving the best of your content while at the same time building trust by making sure you’re successful at what you preach it is also highly important to spend more time and focus your efforts on marketing your blog.

Actually, doing the first two things will help your blog market itself but you need momentum to give your blog a head start. Once you have this momentum you will find everything very easy.

There are several ways to promote your blog, and below are 3 methods I’ve found great success with.

- Guest Blogging: Guest blogging is the process of writing for another blog in order to get the word out about your blog. There are several benefits of writing guest posts for other blogs but the two immediate benefits is that it helps you gain traffic and instant credibility. Other benefits such as link building follows.

Guest blogging is the main way I promoted my blog in 2010 and it has yielded far more results than I expected.

- Blog Commenting: Another great way to get the word out about your blog is by commenting on other blogs. Promoting your blog successfully through blog commenting is more about commenting smartly and not in the numbers. Look for the top blogs with the best posts and community in your niche, read their posts and make well-thought out, highly sensible comments and you’ll be amazed at the type of quality traffic you will get back to your blog.

- Collaboration: Collaborating with other bloggers is the best way to build a great community fast if you’re a new blogger. Do your best to network with other bloggers and make them see that you truly care about them, let them know you’re interested in collaborating with them and “carefully” outline what they’ll be gaining from it. Once you’ve gotten a reply from them and the post is live, try to notify them about it and tell them to share it – with time you will have built a great community.

Conclusion

Note that building a successful blog is not something that can be done in a day, many few drops of water make a ocean and the more you work on building your blog with combination of little efforts you will achieve success in due time.

8 Amazing Blogging Lessons from Albert Einstein

einstein-blogging

Albert Einstein has made many amazing contributions to the scientific world, including the theory of relativity, the founding of relativistic cosmology, the prediction of the deflection of light by gravity, the quantum theory of atomic motion in solids, the zero-point energy concept, and the quantum theory of a monatomic gas which predicted Bose–Einstein condensation … and finally he brings us 8 amazing blogging lessons.

Jokes apart, Einstein was perhaps the most influential scientists to ever live, and I would be strange if we could not find some blogging related principles among his ideas, right?

1. Persevere

“It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

Your blog won’t succeed overnight; success requires perseverance! There’s no such thing as an “overnight success.” What often appears to happen overnight is the result of many years of work.

This is what I call the “silent years” of success. If you can persevere through the “silent years,” then you will qualify to succeed.

Eddie Cantor said, “It takes twenty years to become an overnight success.”

2. Focus

“Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”

I like to say, you can do anything, but not everything! To succeed in blogging you must give your blog the attention it deserves. If you want a part-time income, then you put in part-time hours, if you want a full-time income, …you’ll have to put in full-time hours.

Focus your efforts, if you want to succeed! Focused energy is power, and it’s the difference between success and failure.

If you never focus your efforts …you won’t have a future, just a longer today.

3. Create Value

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

Don’t waste your time trying to create a successful blog, dedicate your time creating a valuable blog. If your blog is valuable to others, it will succeed.

You create value for others by solving their problems. Your blog must solve people’s problems. You will only be rewarded in this lifetime for the problems that you solve for others.

Labor to be valuable and success will chase you down!

4. Be Curious

“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

What you’re curious about is what other like-minded people are also curious about, so blog about things that pique your curiosity.

Don’t write about the mundane, and the obvious; explore your curiosity. Research the unknown and document what has never been documented before.

You have to “think bigger,” Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”

You have to think differently, he said, “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice.”

5. Make Mistakes

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Make mistakes; mistakes make you better, smarter, faster, and more relevant. If you’re not making mistakes then you’re not making progress. Get rejected a few times, mess up a few projects, this is the pathway to success.

Want to succeed twice as fast, make twice as many mistakes, run into twice as many obstacles.

Frank Clark said, “If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”

6. Don’t Be Insane

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

You can’t keep doing the same thing everyday and expect different results. In other words, if your blogging routine is the same from month-to-month, your results will be the same from month-to-month.

In order for your results to change, you must change your actions, to the degree that your actions change will be to the degree that your results change.

7. Expect Opposition

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

There will always be opposition. People will oppose your blog, your ideas, and the risk that you’re taking. Zig Ziglar said, “Little men, with little minds, and little imaginations, go through life in little ruts, smugly resisting all changes which would jar their little worlds.” Never let “little men” stop you from achieving your dreams. Great spirits have always encountered great opposition.

8. Play Better

“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

When it’s all said and done, your success will depend on how well you played the game. You must commit to play the game better than anyone else. If you can play the game “better,” you will succeed!

How Determined Are You to Reach Your Goals?

Do you give up easily? When you fail to get what you want in a short period of time, do you quickly throw up your hands and move on to something else?

The roadblocks you experience on the road to success either lead to ultimate failure or serve as a stepping-stone to your victory. And, the choice is yours. Refuse to give up, and you’ll experience victory.

Setbacks are a natural part of life. They can derail your train to success if you let them, but their purpose is to build you up. They test your resolve so you can see what you’re made of. They show you how bad you want the goal you’re after. They show you where a course correction is necessary. And, they help you to appreciate the sweet victory at the end.

When you learn from your mistakes, you see the value in them. The more mistakes you make, the quicker you’ll reach your goal. Mistakes are simply corrections to your course that keep you on the correct path to your destiny. So hold onto your dreams and keep the momentum building!

How to Keep Yourself Motivated

Motivation is the fuel that keeps your engine running toward your dreams.

Here are some great ways to keep motivated:

  • Keep a diary or journal of your accomplishments and how you overcame setbacks.
  • Remind yourself of where you started and how far you’ve come since then.
  • Spend time with happy, motivated people who encourage you and build you up.
  • Keep moving forward, even if you falter or become frightened.
  • Hang on to the dreams that you have, and know that you can achieve them.

Choose What Matters in Your Life

Staying motivated is mostly a matter of choice. If you’re focused on doing well and staying on course, you’ll have a much better chance of achieving what you desire. Reminding yourself of your goals and what you’ve managed to do so far is a great way of keeping yourself interested in where you’re going. That makes you want to continue instead of giving up or getting discouraged.

No matter what you want to do, you can achieve it. No matter what obstacles you face, you can power through them or find ways around them. Your attitude and determination matter more than your skill. When you set your mind to accomplish something important and pursue it with all of your heart, you can achieve anything your heart desires.

When your attitude is positive and focused, you’ll be destined for success. Success is the only option when you have the proper attitude. Setbacks are only failures if you give up. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and visualize the success you’re working to attain.

The success you crave is within your grasp. Obstacles along the way only serve to show you how strong your desire is to achieve victory. When you find a way around, over or through your obstacle, you’ll discover a renewed confidence and determination that will fuel your journey to the realization of your destiny.
