Do You Republish Other People’s Content? You’ll Want to Read This

Earlier this week Google’s “head of web spam”—Matt Cutts—posted on his blog that they’re implementing a change in their algorithm that impacts those that publish content from elsewhere on the Web.

The changes are all about ranking the original sources of content higher than those who scrape/republish/copy it. This has always been Google’s intent but increasingly some have been seeing scraped content ranking higher than original sources.

In Matt’s words:

“The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.”

This has a couple of implications for bloggers of different types.

For those who produce blogs with original content, it hopefully means not being out-ranked by other sites reproducing your content (with or without permission). As someone who finds his own content appearing on other sites many times a day (many times without credit of the source), for me this is a welcome change.

For those who do use scraping (or syndication) strategies, this news might stimulate a rethink in that approach. I know there are times and places for syndication (particularly if you do so with permission), but this serves as a reminder that in most cases if you’re looking to build a prominent and successful blog, you need to produce something that’s not only relevant and useful, but is also unique.

U.S. Government Seizes Multiple Domain Names and Sites

Quite some interesting news spreading around the internet today about the government and Homeland Security seizing and shutdown a large amount of domains around the web. “The Hill” has the full articles, which states the following:

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: “This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations.”

For instance, 2009jersey.com, 51607.com, and amoyhy.com have each been seized.

TorrentFreak has another article about the domain seizing and also has a large list of “infringing sites” and domains that are no longer in possession of their original owners. The article includes the following recap:

“Following on the heels of this week’s domain seizure of a large hiphop file-sharing links forum, it’s clear today that the U.S. Government has been very busy. Without any need for COICA, ICE has just seized the domain of a BitTorrent meta-search engine along with those belonging to other music linking sites and several others which appear to be connected to physical counterfeit goods.”

Stay tuned as more information on ICE, site infringements and domain names that have been seized all continue to be released…

Web Hosting with Great Customer Support

Over the past decade I’ve had my fair share of web hosting companies and I’ve bounced around from shared hosting to dedicated hosting and even to buying 20 of my own servers and having them in a storage center. The main reason for jumping around with so many hosts, was that my web sites and business was always changing and new sites were exploding while others stayed the same. Either way, no matter how my web sites were doing, it was always important that I could get in contact with my web host quickly and just as important, having them get back to me just as fast.

I was previously with MediaTemple and when I signed up with them, I paid for two server for a year in advance to save some extra money. Their hosting was fine, but the customer support (from my experience) was terrible. If you are a web hosting company and don’t have LIVE CHAT support, or email support that is answered within a few minutes (30 mins max), then you just don’t cut it… and this is how MediaTemple works. It would take anywhere from 10-24 hours from support to get back to your emails. The only way to get instant support was through calling them on the phone. I don’t know about you, but I’m more of an email/chat type of person… so only have phone support as my option is really garbage.

After MediaTemple I went over to WiredTree and they are just a god send. Their support is amazing and they always get back to you within a few minutes of sending an email through their support ticket. WiredTree staff also doesn’t send back one word answers, and they actually make an attempt to help you and not refer you to a “how to” guide. I have WiredTree running my larger web sites like this one.

I also have a few hosting accounts with HostGator. Personally I’ve never really liked the idea of paying a few dollars a month for hosting, just because I would assume the slogan “you get what you pay for”, but HostGator has been great with up time so far, and when you are running huge sites, this is a major concern. I currently have HostGator running a bunch of smaller and test web sites… nothing too crucial. However, I still had a question and wanted to talk with someone from HostGator. I went to their site and saw that they had LIVE CHAT support. I was instantly connected with someone extremely helpful and am glad to be hosting through their company.

I just wanted to share my experience on customer support in the web hosting area. It doesn’t matter if you have shared hosting, VPS, dedicated or even have your own servers in a data center… customer support is one of the most crucial aspects of a successful business and keeping customers happen.

Feel free to share your web hosting customer support stories and help others when trying to find a new web host.

Help LogoMyWay Take Home the $25,000 First Place Prize

It’s really tough to create a new web site and break into a niche where there are already big and successful sites. When my friend Joe Daley said he was going to create LogoMyWay.com, a marketplace for graphic designers, I thought the idea was great, but knew he would have a lot of trouble competing with other big sites in this market like 99Designs. That was over a year ago, and now LogoMyWay is killing it, and also one of my favorite sites for having logo design work done.

Joe is currently in second place for a Kodak Home Office Prosper Contest and the first place winner takes home a $25,000 prize. Joe has a great story and a killer site, so he deserves to win the contest, so I’d surely help him in his efforts to win this contest, and would like for you to do the same. Here’s how you can help, and possibly win a free t-shirt in the process!

Step 1 Vote for Joe Daley
(Visit page, click vote, then confirm email)

Step 2 – Leave a Comment on this Post Stating you Voted.

Ten winners will randomly be selected from comments made on this blog post to receive a free t-shirt from this blog. Winners will be contacted and posted on October 10th. Good luck to both you and Joe!

Screen Capture Tools and Image File Size Reducer Resources

I was just finishing up a new post on PSD to HTML on SixFigureAffiliateBlogging.com, and wanted to liven the post up with some screenshots of each of the sites mentioned in the post. I would usually take a screenshot of a web site using the “Screengrab!” plugin for FireFox, then bring the image into my image editing software to resize. Before doing this, I decided to check out the alternatives and see what the web has to offer.

Here are a few image editing and screenshot resources you may find helpful.

Screengrab – If you are using FireFox, download this plugin and you will have a little button that allows you to capture, copy or save the full view, or a portion of the web site you are currently at. One of the best plugins around, and free!

ShrinkTheWeb – For a web based alternative, ShrinkTheWeb is a top site in the screenshot / thumbnail space. They have a paid version, but the basic six screenshot sizes they give you off their site should be good enough.

SnagIt – It’s always great to capture web sites, but what if you want to capture something else on your computer and the “Print Screen” feature isn’t working. A paid software alternative is “SnagIt”. I have this software on my computer and it’s pretty solid. If you do a lot of screenshots and image editing, it’s worth checking out. My SnagIt Review Post

Skitch – Simply one of my favorite screen capture and image editing programs around. It’s only for the Mac, but it’s amazing. The sizing and text/arrows options are just perfect and the ability to automatically upload images to private Skitch members pages is a huge bonus. This would be a product I would pay for if it wasn’t free. (Must have for Mac users!) My Skitch Review Post

Easily Change Your Image File Sizes

How many times have you had an image and wanted to upload it for your profile picture on a member or social network, then was told it was too big size? Not actual size, but memory size. This happens quite often, and the average internet user would probably just end up selecting a new picture. Instead you can visit any of the sites below and upload your image, then they will automatically crunch it down in size for you. I first came across these web site many years ago, and they are still useful today.

http://www.jpegreducer.com – Easy setup with “upload from computer” or URL of image.
http://www.shrinkpictures.com – Shrink images, with extra features and options.

These sites are extremely simple, fast and don’t require any personal information or software to download.

For any image maniacs, be sure to check out HongKait’s great post on 40 different screen capture tools for both Mac and PC. Feel free to post any useful image editing software and sites you like to use.
